Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude. – Alexis de Tocqueville
While it is true, of course, that inventions have given us tremendous power, it is absurd to suggest that we must use this power to destroy our most precious inheritance: liberty. It does mean, however, that if we want to preserve it, we must guard it more jealously than ever and that we must be prepared to make sacrifices for it. – F.A. Hayek; The Road to Serfdom
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. – Benjamin Franklin
Another good reminder in the era of Trump. It won’t be long before many of his supporters are looking back at all of the liberties they sacrificed in the name of security and a rabid drive to “making America great again” and wonder what have we done?
America First was the battle cry of Nazi sympathizers in the 1930s, used to argue against American involvement in WWII. Now it’s the battle cry of protectionist economics and a war on Islam. I fear the results will be the same now as they were 70 years ago.
